PHOTO RESTORATION EXAMPLE SEVEN

CASE STUDY # 7 – This photograph came to Cider Mill Studio after its owner removed it from a glass glazed frame. There was no matting between the glass and the photo so over time sunlight, temperature and humidity caused the emulsion to stick to the glass. When the photo was removed the emulsion layer was torn away from the paper backing of the photo causing shards of the image to split and tear away. The sun had also faded the image considerably as you can see here in the before and after comparisons.

Under restoration, Cider Mill Studio carefully did a high resolution scan of the fragile original. Once it was in digital form our retouch artist then reconstructed all the damaged areas and brought the scene back to the original brilliance of color and contrast. After that we went a step further and made some enhancements to soften features of the subjects and bring back the great look of this couple.

The final product was custom printed on our in-house professional Epson printers utilizing archival pigment inks and acid free archival paper. Says Epson, Properly matted, framed and displayed, the newly restored photograph is expected to last upwards of 80 years or more!
