PHOTO RESTORATION EXAMPLE FIVE

CASE STUDY # 5 – A professional studio photograph from the 1930s had been tucked-away in a shoebox and forgotten for years. The acids from the cardboard worked to deteriorate the image and it was quickly on its way out. Scanning, retouching and restoring the basic black and white image were the first tasks to be completed.

After contrast enhancement and de-texturing (the image was printed on a textured "silk" surface paper that caused optical issues in the scanning process. You can see this in the scan of the original, below), the image was hand colored to the specifications of the customer who was amazed to see the delivered print.

The customer remarked: The restored photograph carried the exact color of the “beautiful green dress” that she wore the day this photograph was taken… in 1933!
